You will need a terminated CAN cable such as our PCAN-Cable 2. Or something similar if you already have existing CAN cables. The DB-9 connector on the PCAN-USB Adapter is male. The cable has female connectors and the needed 120 Ohm termination resistors installed at both ends.

I see the PCAN USB interface connects to a USB port, and the description says the interface is Linux compatible via SocketCAN. Does the driver present the socketCAN interface 'itself' (the USB interface being transparent), or will I have to provide the transport between the USB interface and the socketCAN interface?

How do I set a custom CAN baud rate, for example, 333 kHz?

It is not possible to configure a CAN baud rate of exactly 333 kbit/s on the CAN-Ethernet Gateway V2. However, a baud rate of 333,333 kbit/s can be configured and has been tested. Please refer to the user's manual (section 6.4) for instructions on setting the gateway to this CAN baud rate.

Does the CANmodul1 require that a 120-ohm resistor be connected at the input port/CAN side?

Yes, a 120-ohm termination resistor is required at both ends of a CAN bus. If the CANmodul1 happens to be at the end, then an external bus termination is needed.

Will the CAN controller automatically determine whether it's a Standard or Extended ID?

Correct, no special settings are needed. The CAN controller automatically detects if it's 2.0A (11-bit identifier) or 2.0B (29-bit identifier) CAN specification.

I'm looking at a GEMAC CAN-bus tester 2 for testing of CAN networks in our machines. Will I be able to debug the hardware side with the package by itself? What does the protocol monitor add-on do?

The protocol monitor does the following: CAN: Reception of CAN message frames incl. filtering, Transmission of CAN message frames and sequences (message lists) What level of testing do you plan to do? We're looking at debugging hardware issues with the network, would like to be able to determine problem messages/nodes on the network. I would recommend getting the protocol monitor license along with the CAN bus tester 2 device. Or you can buy the unit by itself first (available from stock) and see if you are okay without that license. You can always buy it at a later point.

What tools are available for developing a Windows-based CANopen application to talk to various CAN devices?

What is a .dbc file? (relevant for PCAN Explorer 6 - CANdb add-in)

A DBC file is a Communication Database for CAN. It is the distributed system's backbone. DBC files are basic text files that include information for decoding raw CAN bus data to physical values or in human-readable form. They specify which signals (e.g., RPM, Vehicle Speed, etc.) are contained within specific messages (i.e., CAN IDs). In developing a distributed ECU network based on CAN, a key component is the communication description in the form of DBC files. Described in DBC databases are the properties of the CAN network, the ECUs connected to the bus, and the CAN messages and signals.

My version of PCAN Trace (1.8.0.50) software is giving a bad file error message when trying to read my customers' 2.1 recordings. Can you help?

The PCAN-Trace can only handle trace files which comply with file version 1.x. A trace file that complies with version 2.x must be converted into file version 1.x with the 'PEAK-Converter.'

Are the SYS TEC Canmodul1 and the Kvaser Leaf Light v2 the same product essentially?

The two devices provide similar functionality in that they both connect a PC or laptop via its USB interface to a CAN bus. Both devices support the maximum CAN bitrate of 1 Mbit/s. However, both devices have unique designs in terms of internal circuitry and software API/drivers. There are other differences in terms of CAN message throughput, buffer size, etc. If you are using third-party software that specifically requires the use of the Kvaser Leaf Light V2, then I strongly advise against using a different type of USB-CAN interface.

I am looking for an isolated CAN repeater, and I saw the one you have rated to 500V. Do you have any rated for higher voltages, around 1.5-2 kV?

The PCAN-Repeater DR establishes a galvanic isolation of up to 5 kV according to IEC60601-1 within a High-speed CAN bus. Both CAN ports are decoupled from each other and from the power supply. All message traffic, including error frames, is forwarded 1:1 between both ports. The PCAN-Repeater DR behaves passively and is transparent from the perspective of the CAN bus. LEDs display the current bus status.

Any message processing, manipulating, filtering, etc. will require using the corresponding PC software based on the PCAN Basic API. For the latter, use the PCAN Router FD with specially programmed firmware as a stand-alone CAN FD router.

I just need a simple CAN interface with some software that can receive and display CAN messages from other nodes as well as send CAN messages out to other nodes. What device would you recommend?
